The ABCs Program
As one of Kids on Bikes signature programs, The ABCs (Academics, Behavior and Character) program is a school based incentive program designed to steer students toward success in their education and in life.
- Students work with their teacher to set individualized goals in academics, behavior, and character development
- Students who reach their goals receive a brand new bike, helmet, and lock and are acknowledged for their achievement at a school assembly
- Over 300 students have achieved their goals and received a new bike since the program began in 2006
- Community leaders provide additional curriculum on bike safety, nutrition, physical fitness, and bicycle travel
- Students learn the importance of setting goals and strive for future success
This unique program, the only of its type in our community, is offered to schools in high-risk areas. This program offers a brand new bike, helmet and lock to students who achieve pre determined goals in each of the areas of the ABCs program. Working specifically with children in the fifth grade before they enter middle school offers these children the opportunity to take ownership of their education by having a specific and attainable goal to encourage them.
At the beginning of the year, each student meets with their teacher to build a points system individually structured to their areas of strength and goals for improvement. During the semester their progress is carefully monitored, and the student takes responsibility for what is required to achieve his or her goals. At the end of the year, each of the students who succeed in meeting these goals receives a brand new bike, helmet, and lock. A school assembly is held with their families and teachers in a celebration that acknowledges their achievement. This past year we awarded over 100 bikes to these hard working, successful students.
Corporate and private donors have the opportunity to sponsor a child, classroom, or school and become part of this exciting program in inspiring children to reach their goals. If you are interested in how you can contribute, please contact Kids on Bikes.
