Thank you to everyone for coming to visit the Kids on Bikes booth at all the local events this summer! We are so excited to finally have a Kids on Bikes signature cycling jersey and to give away a free jersey to our jelly bean winner. We had a Kids on Bikes water bottle full of jelly beans and had people guess how many were in the water bottle. We had guesses everywhere from 200 to 6,900.

So, the grand winner of the jelly bean challenge is….

Drumroll please…

Katie Flaherty with 482 jelly beans.

Congratulations!!!!

Eat Right

1. Make half your grains whole. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice, and low-fat popcorn, more often.

2. Vary your veggies. Go dark green and orange with your vegetables- eat spinach, broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

3. Focus on fruits. Eat them at meals, and at snack time, too. Choose fresh, frozen, canned, or dried, and go easy of the fruit juice.

4. Get your calcium-rich foods. To build strong bones serve low-fat and fat-free milk and other milk products several times a day.

5. Go lean with protein. Eat lean beef and pork, skinless chicken and turkey, and fish. Also, change your tune with more dry beans and peas. Add chick peas, nuts or seeds to a salad; pinto bean to a burrito; or kidney beans to soup.

6. Change your oil. We all need oil. Get yours from fish, nuts, and liquid oils such as corn, soybean, canola and olive oil.

7. Don’t sugarcoat it. Choose foods and beverages that do not have sugar and caloric sweeteners as one of the first ingredients. Added sugars contribute calories with few, if any, nutrients.

Exercise

1. Set a good example. Be active and get your family to join you. Have fun together. Play with the kids or pets. Go for a walk, tumble in the leaves, or play catch. Join the KOB Bikes for Schools Ride on September 25 and enjoy riding your bike together as a family! Click here for more information.

2. Establish a routine. Set aside a time each day as activity time- walk, jog, skate, cycle, or swim. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days or the week; children 60 minutes every day or most days.

3. Have an activity party. Make the next birthday party centered on physical activity. Try backyard Olympics, or relay races. Have a bowling or skating party.

4. Set up a home gym. Use household items, such as canned foods, as wights. Stairs can substitute for stair machines.

5. Move it! Instead of sitting through TV commercials, get up and move. When you talk on the phone, life weights or walk around. Remember to limit TV watching and computer time.

6. Give activity gifts. Give fits that encourage physical activity- active games or sports equipment.

A BIG thank you to StarFit Kids for the great tips!

THE GAZETTE

Ron Wisner, the retired dean of students at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, died Friday when he crashed while mountain biking with his wife on a trail near Larkspur.

Described by family as an avid cyclist, runner and skier, Wisner, 67, was biking on the Kipps Loop bike trail in Greenland Open Space, according to Cocha Heyden, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“He passed doing one of the things he loved the most,” said daughter-in-law Laura Wisner.

An autopsy is pending and the cause of death has not yet been determined, Heyden said.

Wisner was born June 18, 1942, in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and joined the newly created Peace Corps after graduating from Ohio’s Wittenberg University.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, Wisner taught agricultural practices to farmer in Niger, West Africa. The experience gave him a lifelong love for exploring the world and different cultures, relatives said.

After obtaining a master’s degree from Michigan State University, Wisner, his wife, Jane, and their two children, Mark and Sara, moved to Colorado Springs where he was dean of students at UCCS from 1979 to 2003.

Since retiring, Wisner and his wife spent a year teaching in Copenhagen and twice circled the globe as staff of the Semester at Sea program.

He hiked, bicycled and skied with family and was a marathon runner and member of area running clubs. Among the groups to which he belonged or volunteered for were the U.S. Olympic Committee, Vail Music Festival, Pikes Peak Library District, Tri-Lakes Transportation Services for Seniors and Citizen’s Project.

He served as a board member of the Karen Possehl Endowment for Non-Traditional Women’s Scholarships, UCCS chancellor’s Leadership Class, Pikes Peak Area Peace Corps Alumni and Kids on Bikes.

“Ron had the passion of someone half his age,” Laura Wisner said. “This was a tragic shock. It just was not his time.”

He is survived by his wife, two children and two grandchildren, all of whom live in Colorado.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Hillside Gardens, 100 S. Institute St. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Ron’s honor to Kids on Bikes.

“Kids on Bikes, and especially its ABC’s program, enables me to assist young children to discover the amazing things they’re able to accomplish if they simply develop the ability to channel their considerable energies and abilities; of course, the “carrot” of a free bicycle is a powerful learning incentive!” – Ron Wisner
