Bikes for Tykes Goes the Extra Mile!

August 21st, 2009

We received the following request for donation of a bike through our website last month:

Hello, my name is Susan. I am writing to you to see if you can help me, or refer me to someone who can help me out. I am looking for an organization or company to donate a bicycle for an autistic student in my class. He is 7 years old, and has two younger sisters. His f amily does not have a lot of money right now, and the money that they do have is spent on out of school speech therapy that has really helped him greatly, but isn’t covered by their insurance. They are a very nice and loving family, who are trying to do the best they can with their son. They have come to me, telling me that their son doesn’t play with toys appropriately which I have seen in school, and doesn’t find anything particularly reinforcing. He has enjoyed his hot wheels tike, but unfortunately grew out of it. I was wondering if you or if you knew of anyone w ho could donate a child’s bicycle with training wheels to this family. I know that this bicycle, will only help him improve his interactions with not only his parents but his siblings. I hope you can help me get a bike for my student, it would really mean a lot to me. Thanks!

Unfortunatly, Kids on Bikes mission is to serve children in the Pikes Peak Region, and we were unable to fulfill the request as she live in New Jersey.  I contacted the founder of Bikes for Tykes, a national organization dedicated to provide a bicyle for every child in America, and they were able to ship a bike to Susan.  They really went above and beyond to assure this child received a bike, and we want to thank them for stepping up to the plate and show our appreciation.  I am amazed by the work of Bikes for Tykes and their ability to help us bring joy one bike at a time!
